"A research team in the University of Limerick, led by Dr Niamh O'Meara is currently conducting a study into the use of manipulatives in mathematics classes in 6th class and first year. This study leads on from two national studies that have been conducted in the past two years- The Time Allocated to Mathematics in Ireland study and the Transition from Primary to Post-Primary study. Questionnaires have been sent to a number of schools but due to a restricted budget the sample is relatively small and the response rate is quite low (a lot lower than is the case for the primary schools). As such, the research team is interested in hearing from any first year mathematics teacher who is interested in partaking in the study which looks at the use of manipulatives, the challenges associated with using manipulatives (time, cost etc.), potential benefits of manipulatives as well as the training received, if any in the use of manipulatives. Participation involves the completion of a questionnaire which should take no more than 20 minutes. If interested please contact niamh.omeara@ul.ie and Niamh will send information sheets, answer any queries and will also send on a copy of the questionnaire which can be completed and returned via email or post. Teacher participation is the key to making this research study a success and any help is very much appreciated. Thank you for your time. Niamh" ... See MoreSee Less
